Santa here WE Come

We went for a walk to the post office to mail our letters to Santa. We told him all the reasons we should be on the NICE list.

Christmas Gift/ Donation

 

As Christmas approaches we are reminded of the true meaning of the holiday. This year in lieu of a teacher- Christmas gift, I ask that you consider making a donation on behalf of our grade 3 class to the Ronald McDonald House.  Many of us have had personal experiences with family and/or friends suffering from illnesses. Ronald McDonald Houses bring comfort to many families of children dealing with a life-altering diagnosis. RMHC serve as a home away from home for families of seriously ill children undergoing treatment or surgery at a nearby hospital. All proceeds raised through these donations will help give families a place to eat, rest and relax just steps from their child's bedside. I have personally stayed at the Southwestern Ontario London Site and there is also a local site in Windsor by Met hospital. Please by no means feel any pressure to do this. I just thought this would be a nice way to make Christmas a little brighter for others. As I mentioned to the students, the best gift they can give me is a card with a message telling me what they like most about our class.

Hip...Hip...Array!

An arrangement of objects or pictures in columns and rows is called an array. Arrays are useful representations of multiplication.

Here are different ways that we are learning to solve multiplication questions:

Social Studies Unit

Our class is studying the social studies unit on “Early Communities in Canada”.
We will be investigating communities between 1780-1850, including First Nations and Metis communities
and newcomer settlements in Upper and Lower Canada. Your child will learn about the relationships
among various groups and the consequences of their interactions.

This unit will focus on the following core principle of Catholic Social Teachings:
the person as a part of a family and a community, as well as the following Catholic virtues:
faith, hope, love, justice, self-discipline and courage.

*Encourage your child to make personal connections to events that happened long ago.

Your child will also be developing inquiry and mapping skills as we work on this unit:
how to ask questions; how to gather and organize information; how to interpret and analyze images;
how to evaluate information and draw conclusions; and how to analyze maps.
To help develop your child’s skills try...

*Asking questions about Canada’s history. “When did people first settle in our community?
How were people’s lives then different from ours?

*Look for sources of information together that you can trust.

As we work through this unit, I will be sending home other activities that you and your child can work on together.

Taekwon Do Demonstration

Joshua is studying Tae Kwon Do and participated in a demonstration at another school in our board. He showed us and taught students some basic moves during gym class.

 

Anti Bullying Week

Students were encouraged to wear pink in support of anti-bullying.

Heritage Village

The Grade 3s enjoyed a hands-on field trip to the Heritage Village today.

 

The students explored the pioneer town by taking part in a village detective quest.

Students had a real lesson in history when they churned butter in a traditional log house and made candles in a jail (not typical of pioneer times)!

 

 

 

 

 

 

The students experienced a day in one-room school house.

 

 

 

 

 

They were given traditional pioneer names and had an opportunity to use slate boards.

We tried to read some tongue twisters!

Teachers had some pretty strict rules!

 

 

 

At “recess time” children played with vintage toys and even a bow and arrow.

The weather was mild for a town tour and parents, grandparents, students and teachers had a wonderful day!
